We're
Wild about Weather!
Snow,
rain, hail, fog - so many different kinds of weather! Next week
in K-Plus we will learn how clouds get their shape and how rainbows get
their colors! We'll make a penguin measuring stick to measure how
much snow has fallen and a windsock to determine the direction in which
the wind is blowing. We'll also color our very own weather wheels,
create a fantastic Groundhog Day sticker scene and
design original weather pictures depicting a weather condition of
our choosing. On Feb 2, we will learn fun Groundhog Day facts about the
annual tradition of waiting for Punxsutawney Phil to emerge from his
home in anticipation of 6 more weeks of winter! Brrr!
In Language
Arts we will play What's Gnu? - a word building
game f or beginning readers
and enjoy Tic Tac Toe using some of our previously learned
sight words. We will also introduce the word families ending
with -op and -ot. We'll play a fun game called Toss, Read and Write to
practice these word family endings, as well as those we've already
learned. We'll also experience weather up close
and personal as we embark on another great adventure on the Magic
School Bus. We'll become part of a storm as we enjoy this
wonderful story!
Next
week in Math we will work
on the Number Relationships- one fewer and two fewer.
We'll practice taking away one or two items from a group of
familiar objects - and discover how many are left! We
will also play various group games to help understand the concept
of one fewer and two fewer. To further reinforce this
concept, we'll read the book More
or Less by Stuart J .
Murphy. This fun story is about a boy named Eddie who works
the "guess the age" booth at a fair while being blindfolded.
He guesses people's ages by asking questions and narrowing his guess to
a number more than or less than another number. If he can't guess
correctly after six attempts, he gets dunked in a pool! We'll work on
our math skills as we try to guess along with
Eddie!
In our
Writing center, we
will use our alphabet dice to play a game that will allow us to
practice writing words we create using our word family
endings. We will also practice writing our sight words in simple
sentences. Our journal writing this week will be about
"rainy days" - we'll write simple sentences describing
what we like to do when it rains outside!
